DS 106 Comes to a Close

DS 106 Comes to a Close

I didn’t have a ton of advice for future students because I thing half of the fun with this class and trying to figure your way through it. In general, I spoke of the benefits of online classes, shaping assignments to make them fun for […]

Fighting Global Warming

Fighting Global Warming

For my final assignment, I chose to focus on the real world villain of global warming. My character, Weather Woman, has made an appearance for several other eco-friendly assignments so I thought I would end with a myriad of global warming information and PSAs. Visuals […]

So You’re Thinking of Taking DS106?

So You’re Thinking of Taking DS106?

The benefit of taking online classes is that you can generally work them around your schedule. This is especially true for a class like this one where everyone has the same standard due date each week. If you have a lot of free time in the beginning of one week and a lot at the end of another, you can switch things up as long as everything is completed by the deadline.

The class is a lot of work. You will be creating multiple media assignments each week, but it won’t necessarily feel like work. While I will admit that some weeks have been a struggle, there are other weeks where I am really excited about creating an assignment and seeing its end result. So will you should be prepared for a fair amount of work, don’t expect it to be boring. You get to shape assignments tot your own liking; make it something you will enjoy doing.

Learn how to operate your website. This wasn’t a problem for me because I have had a lot of experience with WordPress, but it’s important to know how to work and create on your site to make your blog as useful as possible.

I wish I known how many different softwares we would be using so that I had more time to find some for my computer. I found that certain softwares were not very compatible with my laptop so I would have to install and uninstall programs until I found that worked and that could take a bit of time.

I was worried about this class because I am a senior with an 18 credit course load and I wasn’t sure how I would manage my time for this class. However, it ended up being one of my more enjoyable classes. It was interesting working with different types of media and, while I liked some more than other, it was a learning experience that I hope I will be able to apply in the future.

Crisis Aversion Plan

Crisis Aversion Plan

My character, Weather Woman, generally deals more in the real life than superhuman beings so I decided to go more with real life crises for my final project. The different mediums I will be using are visuals, audio, and design. For the designs, I will […]

Mixing It Up In Week Twelve

Mixing It Up In Week Twelve

Let me start off by saying that I apologize, because I did not do a good job of reading the assignment directions. I realized a couple issues when I read through the the Weekly Assignments post again. I did not connect any of my original […]

How to Create a Child’s Drawing

How to Create a Child’s Drawing

For this assignment I decided to create a tutorial on how I complete my childhood representation video. I struggled a lot with this myself because it involved so many different programs. Here is my step my step of how to create a screen recording of drawing on paint and making it into a video.

How to get a crayon

First, I used the paint program provided on my computer. Under the brushes section, you have several different options. For my assignment I chose the crayon, but you could choose any that fit.

How to Screen Record

Then, I used the screen recorder in PowerPoint. It is located under the insert section.

Turn off cursor and audio

The screen will switch to whatever is opened behind PowerPoint. Then this small screen will popup. Make sure you turn off the pointer and audio. The pointer takes away from the effect and the audio will be replaced with something else later anyway so this save you a step from having to separate the video and the audio later.

Select portion of screen you want to record

Then you will select the area you wish to record. I used a random center area within the paintable area and know to stay within those lines when drawing.

Press record

Hit record and start drawing!

Draw and then hit stop when done

Once you’ve finished you hit stop. You can also pause as needed so that everything stays within one video clip. You are still able to use things outside of your selected area while recording so I was able to change the colors while I was creating the actual project.

video transfer to powerpoint, save as

The video then gets moved into the PowerPoint and you can then save it as an MP4 on your computer. Now let’s switch to the audio.

Import audio

For this part, I used Audacity to combine my audio. I got my audio for this assignment from freesounds.org, but you can get your audio from other platforms or record them yourself and then use this program to edit them together.

cut to desired length

You want to make sure your audio all ends at the same time so you need to highlight and delete any extra.

export audio

Once you’ve got your audio set you need to export it as an MP3.

Import media

I used OpenShot to edit my video. It’s a little glitchy on my computer, but I like its usability best out of the couple I tried. If you will need to import your video and audio into the program.

show up here

They will then show up in the project files section for your use in this project.

Click and drag to track

Click and drag the files onto different track lines (make sure you drag them to the front so that they start at the right time).

cut

You can use the scissors to turn on the split. Then select where you want to cut each track (you could cut out a section of video if you want to, but I simply used to the cut my audio since it was longer than my video). Then you just delete any media that you don’t need. If you cut anything out of the middle you want to be sure that you move everything up so that there aren’t any unwanted breaks in your audio or video.

export

Once you’ve finished, you’ll want to export your video (saving will only save it within the program, but as a video that can be downloaded).

From there you can upload it to your website of choice (Youtube or Vimeo). Good luck!!!

Weather Woman Drowning Her Enemies

Weather Woman Drowning Her Enemies

Upon going to this weeks assignment post to make sure I had done everything, I noticed that my mashup were supposed to be related to my character. Since my other 12 stars of assignments did not I decided to do a fourth assignment with my […]

Pollock Hurricane Ispiration

Pollock Hurricane Ispiration

http://remix.ds106.us/remixassignments/imitate-some-weather-remixed-pollack-style/ I pulled inspiration from the painting Full Fathom Five by Jackson Pollock. Earlier in the semester I created a sound sample of my character’s, Weather Woman, power using only things right next to me. For this remix, it said to pull inspiration from a […]

Chemo Preparedness Pack

Chemo Preparedness Pack

For my first remix I decided to go back to the “What’s In My Bag?” assignment I did earlier in the semester. When I clicked on button, it gave a cancer related remix.

Cancer Sucks Preparedness Kit

This is something very close to my heart. I am actually a member of the Relay for Life Planning Committee at UMW. A club that organizes several fundraising events throughout the year leading up to our main Relay event in April. Relay for Life is part of the AMerican Cancer SOciety and raises money for cancer research and support programs. To recreate this I decided to create a preparedness bag of what someone in chemo may have. I have not personally had or been to a chemo session so I looked at several sites to see what they said people should bring. Based on those suggestions I added to the following:

  • Reading material (Cosmo and Priority List- a autobiography of a teacher who was diagnosed with brain cancer about his struggles in his life)
  • Earbuds
  • A scarf
  • Medicine
  • A waterbottle
  • A bracelet a memento for strength
  • and Chapstick

All packed into a purse that people would never guess contained small comforts for someone going through a grueling process. I lost a cousin to childhood cancer when he and I were both young. He was the closest in age to me on either side of my family so as I have grown up I have often had to take a moment to realize that the simple things that you got to do growing up, he never got the chance. He was 10 when he died and as I’ve gone through each stage of my life I have thought of how he did not get the chance to go to prom or go to college. Nor did he get to see his younger siblings do those things. Something so simple that people don’t necessarily think about. I can’t imagine having to go through chemo as an adult so I can only imagine how horrendous it was for a child. This assignment was very close to my heart  and is only a small representation of what I hope to end by being a part of clubs and organizations like Relay for Life.
