I didn’t have a ton of advice for future students because I thing half of the fun with this class and trying to figure your way through it. In general, I spoke of the benefits of online classes, shaping assignments to make them fun for […]
Let me start off by saying that I apologize, because I did not do a good job of reading the assignment directions. I realized a couple issues when I read through the the Weekly Assignments post again. I did not connect any of my original mashup assignments to my character so I created a new mashup assignment and completed it as a fourth mashup that did connect to my character so that I’d have at least one. I also realized that as I was looking for the remix tags that we were not supposed to remix our own work. Both of mine were remixes of assignments I had already completed, however I am very happy with how they turned out so I hope they are okay. Now onto my assignments…
This week we had to do two daily creates, My first was using images to and get people to guess a book.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) November 16, 2017
Me Before You is my favorite book that I’ve read in the last few years because I got so into it that I was actually sobbing at the end. With school I don’t necessarily have a lot of time to read for fun, but I was really excited to read it. I pulled some parts of the book that those who have read it (or seen the movie) would be able to easily recognize. The tights and read dress are representative of the main female character. And the motorcycle are representative of the main male character. I then took these photos and made a collage. It was nice to go through the book in my mind again while I was creating this, reminding me of how much I enjoyed reading it.
Next was to create a shadow using an object.

I am currently is the end stages of writing my final research paper for my capstone history course within my major. I grew up surrounded by historical sites and it has instill a love of history and I decided to become a history major after coming to college. History isn’t pretty. It’s full of tragedy. However, I think it’s important to learn about our past in order to be better prepared for the future. No matter how horrible the event, I think it’s important to know about history so that we can do everything in our power to keep it from repeating. I used a ring I have to create a heart in this book about Cherokee history that am using as a source for my research paper. This specific page discusses one of the many tragedies face by the Cherokee. Although it is a bad part of our history when you consider how much Indigenous people suffered at the expense of American expansion, it is vital that we acknowledge it so that people do not continue suffer due to our actions.
My first mashup this week was a closeup using two different photos.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) November 17, 2017
I actually ended up adding a third image to make the story that I was trying to create more understandable. Waking up is generally not a pleasant thing for me since I’m not a complete morning person. I don’t hate mornings, but mornings hate me. I really like how this photo turned out. I was worried about cutting out the top layers since I have never done it before and that it would look weird, but it ended up turning out very well and the images blended beautifully.
My second assignment was taking a logo of a company and incorporating something I love to get at that place.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) November 17, 2017
This assignment’s story actually changed after I created it. I had intended to make an artistic adjustment to Sephora’s minimalist logo. However after I finished making this, I thought it looked kind of creepy. A common feeling is that when you go to Sephora without makeup it is kind of assumed that you are an amateur and don’t know anything so what are you doing in this high class make-up place. The new feeling created was the judgey eye of the employees. I know I have definitely felt that feeling. I had to spend a decent amount of time trying to find a good eye to use in this. Once I found one I changed it to black and white and superimposed it over the “o”. I wish I had been able to blend the edges better to create a more gradual transition to white. The way it is right now is a little harder than I had originally intended.
Next was creating a new image using two sports team logos.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) November 17, 2017
Although I am not a fan of really any sport, I do have two football teams that I am a fan of out of family obligation. A large portion of my family is from Iowa and Minnesota, therefore, I am a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings. In this mashup I superimposed the Hawkeyes logo onto the Viking’s helmet. It looks like a cute little sticker on hit helmet to support his favorite college team. I do think this is a little simplistic. However, these are really the only two teams that I even remotely know about and there was only so much I could do with the logos.
For my final (makeup) mashup assignment, I created a new assignment to place superpowers into an everyday situation.
My character Weather Woman has an goal to get rid of all bad weathermen. Somethings she better about how than others. In this case, her emotions got the best of her and created a storm indoors. After trying to edit the lightening image to superimpose on this an its appearance being not the best, I was a little more selective with my rain and cloud image and chose a cartoon instead of actual rain/clouds because it was easier to get rid of the background. I wish the lightening had turned out better, but overall I like how this turned out. I also found it different funny how he is completely confusing instead of terrified at the lightening in front of his face.
My first remix was of the “What’s in My Bag?” with a cancer sucks aspect.
This remix ended up being very close to my heart because I am part of a club that raises funds for cancer research and support programs. I thought about how my purse was full of things that made me happy or made me more comfortable in my day to day life and what someone who is going through chemo would have in theirs. I used a pretty Kate Spade bag because someone in the beginning stages may appear healthy, but in reality they are facing many hardships and need help to get them through a grueling process like chemo. In theory, I could used my own belongs for most of these and I can of wish I had so that it would look more realistic instead of a bunch of individual images put together. With the exception of the bag, pills, and bracelet, I own all of these things and a real image may have had a bigger impact as it would bring it back to reality.
For my second remix it when back to my weather woman power sample and was given a Jackson Pollock inspiration remix.
I looked through many different paintings until I saw a superhero inspiration in one of them. The one I ultimately picked reminded me of the chaos of heavy storms. In my original assignment I did a simple wind and chimes demonstration of Weather Woman’s powers. However, with his painting I was inspired to demonstrate what the dark side of her powers could “look” like. I had to bend the rules a little bit to allow me to use anything inside my apartment instead just things within arms reach. However, I did only use sounds created by me and nothing from a public use forum. Ultimately, this ended up sounds more like heavy rain than a hurricane, but both can be very hectic and capture the feeling I got when looking at the painting.
Finally, we have the tutorial. I decided to go back and give a tutorial on how I did my child’s drawing assignment because it was something I struggled with recently. Most of the struggle came from using a few different programs. I learn best through visuals so I decided to go with more image based instructions. I took screenshots from each step in the process using red arrows and boxes to draw attention to the important parts. I wasn’t very text heavy, but I went based on the assumption that by the point in the semester I created this, student’s would be mostly familiar with how to use the programs separately, it was just about bringing them all together to create something new and interesting.
This week was part two of videos! Let’s start off with the daily creates. There were three this week. This first one I did was to illustrate and idiom. I am often guilty of this crime… #ds106 #tdc2130 pic.twitter.com/5qrW8Xsr00 — Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) November 8, […]
This week we had to do two daily creates. The first one I did was to create something to replace a scarecrow. I did a pumkin carving contest and my owl turned into a sharp tooth monster that could scare all.. #ds106 #tdc2124 pic.twitter.com/HkMrErm8PZ — […]
This week we had to do three daily creates.
My first one (that I submitted late and I apologize for) is a Youtub dub:
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) October 26, 2017
I took the song My Heart Will Go On and paired it with the music video for Party Rock Anthem. It actually ended up working really well because the video was placed in a more apocalyptic setting which created the perfect backdrop for this songs about love and loss. It also kind of works for the main singers. Some could argue that it is also a song celebrating the LMFAO singers friendship in this tragic situation.
For the second daily create, I had to say where life and DS106 will be in 300 years.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) October 26, 2017
I believe that cats can be nice and they could be vicious. Both of these are great qualities in a leader. So it is no surprise that cats may take over. They would do away with human teachers and bring in the cats to teach them well.
Finally I did a wanted poster for a villain selfie.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) October 28, 2017
I had intended to post a picture of myself, but when I got home and saw this I new I wouldn’t be able to. I figured since this class is about creativity, we could go with our gut sometimes and do something not complete within the guidelines set by the school. I think this works for the assignment because I have no doubt that I would put this person on a wanted wall.
I believe these stories connected is through the idea of extreme. The over partying leading to a work were everyone is likely dead or dying. A world takeover by cats in which they become the supreme overlords. Finally my immense anger whenever I see someone put toilet paper on-top of the role; prompting me to put up posters and fine someone for breaking this simple rule. Although to overreaction varieties, you can see a lot of DS106 classes caused by extreme stress. .
I found the radio shows very interesting because they all varied. The variance made it easier to listen to the story. I found that one group seemed to soar about the rest, but all of the groups were good. I loved the similar sound quality and the fact that they recorded everything together no only for sound quality, but to give the show a more relaxed and chatty view that could certainly be felt by me.
My website change wasn’t super complicated. I decided to keep the base of the website the same, but change the message. I took the rotten tomatoes Batman and Robin review (which is super bad) and make it everyone’s favorite movie. I edited all the stats within the site to be better and changed all the comments to positive sticking with the original words as much as possible. I had some trouble at first navigating and there was a glitch where I had to start over a few times. I believe my site edit is very interesting and fits the assignment well. There were a lot of small things to edit to keep the reviews positive, but I think I found everything I could.
I did the Dream Room (4.5 stars) for one of my assignments. I found this really interesting as I love to look through Pinterest, but I usually focus on teaching tips and food I can make. I didn’t add a lot to my board because I have a relatively minimalist view even it that is no where near my reality. I had a bed and desk as well as plants and abstract pieces. This assignment was relatively easy to complete, but I had to think for bit to find this I would honestly want in the list has that has not been my focus on Pinterest. I really like this assignment.
Next I did a Google Quick Draw (2.5 stars). Quick draw is something that I am very familiar with, but that I haven’t used in a while. I used to play it often when first became available, but lately it has been becoming less and less frequent. The fact that something can guess what we want to know about from our drawings is very fascinating. It doesn’t matter how many times I play this, I still like it. This assignment was relatively easy since I got some easier to draw topics for quick draw.
Finally I completed the Object Through Different Lenses assignment. I picked this because it sounded very interesting, but then it quickly changed when I realized what I had to do. It seemed like a lot of pictures which made me nervous. I actually had a very difficult time picking a topic. I finally settled on drinkware. I have collected a lot of things in my 22 years so I thought I would do something like Drinkware Based on Maturation. It was also difficult because I had to edit each picture. I feel pretty good about this assignment, but it was definitely one of the most challenging for me.
Week six coming to a close, almost halfway there!
First there was my design reflection from one of the offered readings. Overall, the reading just really surprised me with the amount of things that creators have to consider when designing an advertisement or making a logo. Although I knew it wasn’t simple. I never realized it had that many facets.
Next was the DesignBlitz. This was actually harder than I thought it would be. Although there are posters and advertisements all over campus, I wasn’t sure what category they fit into. Ultimately, I found five things that I felt represented five different topics on the list. This was probably the most difficult assignment for me this week just in terms of choosing what to pick. I mostly chose images, however, I remembered in the reading how the author compared ad designers and architects so I also chose to include a building as one of my design objects. Overall, I feel that I did well with this assignment.
Then, from the select one section, I chose to complete the Superpower Tattoo. I had a lot of fun with this one because I knew I could include a tattoo design that I was already considering because it worked for me personally and fit into a superpower I wanted to have. I hate driving so if I could fly instead I would be ecstatic. I want to travel and I want to fly so the paper airplane was the perfect design for me in many ways. Although simple, I feel that the design fits the assignment and me perfectly.
First my first assignment I made a minimalist movie poster. I saw this and the first thing I thought of was the movie Benjamin Button. It was such an interesting movie, but I felt that it could be simplified into one central object mentioned in the movie. A clock that ran backwards. I created a simple clock with roman numeral and used an arrow to demonstrate the direct that it went in. It isn’t completely obvious if you haven’t seen the movie, but I really liked making the design and I love how it turned out.
Then I look inspiration from Weather Woman and made a motivational poster. I looked up some simple motivational phrases and found one that said “With great power comes the need to take naps,” and was instantly inspired. Weather Woman is constantly on TV so being refreshed in very important. However, as a superhero, something she may forget to sleep. The radio show from last week also helped inspire this with the weak and tired Batman. It doesn’t matter how strong the character is, they have basic needs. I had a picture on my phone of a cat that I watch sometimes sleeping and used her a Weather Woman’s cat. It is a motivational poster for the super and normal alike because everyone needs to sleep.
Finally, I made an advertisement for a product I thought Weather Women would want. One of weather woman’s goals is to get rid of the bad weatherman. A couple weeks ago I made a wanted poster with the image of guy pretending to be a weatherman wearing an umbrella hat. I used a low skilled drawing of him to show the power of the Weatherman Transporter. This invention transports bad weatherman to Antarctic where they can always get the weather right and stay with the penguins. I did mess up on the poster by misspelling Antarctica (missed the first “c”). However, overall I’m happy with how it turned out. I’m not the best artist so it is very good for me and I think it’s something my character would greatly enjoy.
This week we had to do three daily creates.
First was to make a smile using vegetables.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) October 4, 2017
This assignment came up a few days before I went grocery stopping so the only vegetables I had on hand were in a can. Because of this I had to get a little creative. I decided to draw a vegetable and give him a motive. This unsuspecting carrot is happy about his freedom from the ground; unaware that this means is end may be soon. Although I had to bend the rules, I had fun with this assignment.
Next was create a news story using a rejected storm name.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) October 5, 2017
I chose the storm name Hades and have some fun with a few Greek mythology puns in my weather report. I used an audio recorder on my phone and then uploaded it to Soundcloud. I did not give my storm a location, but I discussed the storms that seemed to come from Zeus himself. This was an interesting assignment to make because all of the name sounded fun to create something out of.
Finally was a post about our personal Kryptonite.
— Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) October 6, 2017
I chose traffic as my Kryptonite and took a screenshot of some lovely traffic of 95 on my Waze Traffic app. I have never really been a fan of driving (as I stated earlier) and nothing quite drains me as having to sit through traffic. I will take back roads and routes that take longer if it means not having to deal with traffic. I tried to find a red zone on the app (traffic basically stopped), but it wasn’t the right time of day. Still I think my point came across especially since there were accident markers on the road as well.
I had a lot of fun this week!
Done with the first month, in to the second. Audio was the overarching theme this time around. For this week we had to do three daily creates. First was combining two fears. Spider's and Smalltalk, oh my!! #ds106 #tdc2085 pic.twitter.com/FhYNTUD8Oq — Kasey Mayer (@KaseyMayer) September […]
